Dali
| Off to Dali! The whole of Yunnan is mountainous and somewhat arid. Yet, everywhere you see farms and expanses of cultivated land whether or not there's water nearby. As we drove from Kunming to Dali you would see corn and chili's being dried in the sun. You can nearly feel the calm and simplicity about the lifestyle..them. you're awaken by some woman hacking up phlegm and watching the loogie soar across the air and splatter contently onto the ground. Nevermind, Chinese people are the same everywhere. We stopped at the Dragon Door where monks centuries ago climbed a mountain and carged an altar into the rock overlooking Tianci Lake. The influence of Buddhism is evident here and as we continued our journey closer to Tibet and Burma became more and more prevalent. After that, we rode a ski-lift to the middle of another mountain and got beautiful view of the Dali. It's a fertile swath of land in between two mountain ranges and bordering the lake. Absolutely stunning. Visited a local's house where they were dying textiles. A jade store - bleh. Dali old city was the former kingdom's outer walls. Inside, shop vendors lined the old streets. |
